Herons down Rochester 17-6

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—
The William Smith lacrosse team jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first half and continued to control the game from there, as the Herons defeated the University of Rochester 17-6 in a Liberty League game played this afternoon. William Smith completed the regular season with an 8-8 overall mark, and a 7-2 record in league play. The Yellowjackets finished their 2012 season with a 2-13 record and a 1-8 mark in the conference.

Junior Kathleen Ragan led the Herons with two goal and four assists for a game-high six points. Senior Rosie Scheibel notched a game-high four goals and added an assist. Seniors Lucy Johnson and Christine Abramo each contributed three goals. Johnson also won a game-high six draw controls. First-year Megan Robson chipped in two goals and an assist, and sophomore Hannah Schickel shared a game-high four ground balls.

Sophomore Maggie McNair played the opening 50:15 in net for William Smith and finished with four saves. Sophomore Rachel Fippinger came in for the final 9:45 and made one save.

Junior Liza Maizel led Rochester with two goals and an assist. She also won a team-high four draws and picked up three ground balls. Sophomore Lindsey Randall and first-year Lauren Basil each produced two goals. First-year Maddie Elia played all 60 minutes in goal for the Yellowjackets. She finished with 12 saves and shared a game-high with four ground balls.

The Herons went on a 12-0 run to begin the game. The spree began with a goal by Ragan at 1:48 and finished with Ragan's second tally of the afternoon with 6:26 left in the first half. Scheibel scored all four of her goals and also earned an assist in the run. Johnson scored three, including back-to-back tallies which both came after feeds from Ragan. Abramo notched two in the run and senior Callie Frelinghuysen scored on a free position.

Basil capitalized on a free position attempt for Rochester to put the Yellowjackets on the board with 1:24 left in the first half. Robson scored back-to-back goals to give William Smith a 14-1 lead at halftime.

Maizel found the back of the net 2:43 into the second half to make it 14-2. Sophomore Micailah Adee and senior Megan Brophy each notched their first goal of the year to stretch the William Smith lead to 14. At 16:31 in the second, Randall logged an unassisted tally for the Yellowjackets. Maizel and Basil followed, each logging their second goals of the afternoon to make the score 16-5. With 4:29 left in the game Abramo scored on a free position. In the final minute, Randall put a shot past William Smith keeper, Fippinger, after a feed from Maizel for the final margin.

William Smith enjoyed a 31-12 advantage in shots and a 19-17 edge in ground balls. The Herons also held an 18-8 lead in draws.

The Herons have clinched a spot in the 2012 Liberty League Tournament, which begins on Friday, May 4. William Smith is the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 RIT. The tournament will be played at top-seeded Rensselaer.
