Three Statesmen tennis players received All-Liberty League honors as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Junior
Bruce Grant was named to the All-Liberty League singles team and junior
Alex James garnered singles honorable mention, while the pair of Grant and first-year
Michael Fields received doubles honorable mention.
Grant led Hobart playing all of his matches at the top singles spot. He posted an 11-9 overall record and an 11-8 mark in dual matches. Grant was tabbed the Liberty League Performer of the Week twice this year. He earned the award after posting a perfect 4-0 record, during the Statesmen's spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Grant also received the award in the fall after helping Hobart to a 9-0 win over St. John Fisher with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles. Grant collected All-Liberty League first team singles and doubles honors last season and garnered all-league honorable mention in singles and doubles as a first-year. He has registered 24 career singles victories and 28 career doubles victories. Grant has played every singles and doubles dual match in his Statesmen career at the No. 1 spot.
Grant teamed up with Fields to lead the Statesmen with a 10-6 doubles record, including a 10-5 mark at the No. 1 spot. The pair rounded out the year with a 6-3 record in their last nine matches, including notching five straight wins in matches against St. Lawrence, NYU, Rochester, RIT and Ithaca. Fields also led Hobart with a 17-3 singles record in his rookie season. He was tabbed Liberty League Rookie of the Week three times this season.
James shared second on the team with 14 singles victories this year. He posted a 14-5 overall singles mark, including a 6-3 record at No. 2. He was 3-1 at both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, and earned two wins at No. 5. James went 6-3 in his last nine matches of the season. He was tabbed Liberty League Performer of the Week once. James added a 12-10 overall doubles record. He paired up with
Matt Hursh for an 8-2 record, including a 6-2 mark at No. 2. Last season, James was selected All-Liberty League first team in doubles. He also received all-league doubles honorable mention in 2010. James has posted a 36-22 singles record and a 29-36 doubles record in his three seasons on the Hobart tennis team.
Hobart logged a 17-5 overall record in 2011-12, tying the program record for wins in a season. The Statesmen finished the year ranked No. 14 in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
