The William Smith College tennis team will host the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship this weekend, Sept. 22-24. Teams from all over the Northeast will travel to Geneva to take part in the three-day tournament. The Herons will welcome more than 70 student-athletes, representing 24 institutions.
Three Herons will compete in the singles bracket: first-year
Charlotte Federowicz, senior
Hallsey Leighton and sophomore
Haley Wolf. Federowicz posted a 4-0 singles record in the Mary Hosking Invitational, capturing the C Flight Singles title.
Senior
Kiara Ocasio and sophomore
Teru Greene as well as the pair of Leighton and Wolf will represent William Smith in the doubles bracket. Greene and Ocasio are the No. 4 seed. The duo logged a perfect 4-0 doubles record at the Mary Hosking Invitational, clinching the A Flight Doubles title.
Vassar's Ava Sadeghi is the No. 2 seed in singles. She will be looking to defend her 2011 title. Last year's doubles champions, Skidmore's Lee Ford and Nataly Mendoza, are this year's top-seeded doubles team.
Matches will be held at the HWS Tennis Center and on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House.
The eight singles and eight doubles regional champions from across the country will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, scheduled for Oct. 11-14 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
Following the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, William Smith will host St. John Fisher on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. The Herons will wrap up their fall season, competing in the New York State Championships in Ithaca, N.Y., Oct. 12-14.
