Three members of the William Smith College field hockey team were recognized for their outstanding play last week by the Liberty League office today. Senior Margaret McConnell
was named the Defensive Performer of the Week, first-year Alessandra Patrizio
earned the Rookie of the Week Award, and senior Taylor Cappello
merited a spot on the weekly honor roll.
McConnell scored three goals in a 2-0 finish to the regular season. She rang up a pair of tallies in the Herons' 7-0 blowout of Nazareth on Wednesday. William Smith's defense limited the Golden Flyers to just four shots in the match. On Saturday at then No. 13 Messiah, McConnell added the goal that tied the match 2-all early in the second half.
McConnell is third on the team in goals (7), assists (5), and points (19) this season. She also has two of the team's three defensive saves. This is the third time this season McConnell has earned the league's weekly defensive award.
Patrizio registered five points last week. She notched a goal and an assist against Nazareth and scored the game-winning goal in overtime as William Smith defeated the Falcons for the first time since 1999, 4-3.
Patrizio also has seven goals this season and is tied for fourth on the team with 17 points. This is the third time she has received the league's rookie award.
Cappello led the Herons with eight points last week. She produced a season-high seven points on three goals and an assist against the Golden Flyers. Cappello assisted on Patrizio's game winner at Messiah.
Cappello leads the team in goals (14), assists (8), and points (36).
