HWS sailing qualifies for Coed Dinghy National Semifinals, wins MAISA Spring Open

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team earned a fourth place finish at the America Trophy hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy this weekend, qualifying for the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Semifinals. HWS also took first out of 16 teams at the MAISA Spring Open.

In Annapolis, Md., the Colleges' finished fourth out of 18 teams. The top eight teams qualified for the Coed Dinghy National Semifinals which will be held in Hampton, Va., April 27-28. Georgetown took first place and Navy finished second. Old Dominion rounded out the top three. In the A Division, seniors John Norfleet and Bridget Nannig claimed second place. In their 18 races, they finished in the top three 11 times, including five first place finishes. First-year Eddie Cox, junior Louis Padnos, senior Catherine Pelo and junior Jane Rew competed for HWS in the B Division. They placed in the top five in 10 of their races and earned one win.

The MAISA Spring Open was held in Kings Point, N.Y. Sophomore Elliott Morrill and first-year Sarah Hogg finished in second place in the A Division. They placed in the top five in all eight of their races and earned two victories. First-years Stewart Draheim and Ema Johnson won the B Division. They also placed in the top five in all eight of their races. Draheim and Johnson posted six first place finishes.

HWS will be back on the water, April 20-21, when they compete in Kings Point, N.Y., at the Admiral's Cup and in New London, Conn., at the Thompson Trophy to round out the regular season.
