Two members of the William Smith squash team were honored at the annual Heron Awards Banquet. First-year
Rachel Newman was presented with the Irene Grace Harer '28 Squash Award and first-year
Justine Shank received the Lauren Michels '05 Squash Coach's Award.
Newman played all 18 matches in her rookie season at the No. 1 spot. She led the Herons with a 13-5 record. Newman closed out the season going 7-3 in her final 10 matches. She won each of her matches in the 2013 College Squash Association Team National Championships, guiding the Herons to their second ever Epps Cup. Newman also competed in the CSA Individual National Championships. She was the first Heron to play in the individual championships since Sarah Coffin '05 and Shaila Pandole '07 competed in 2004.
Shank started all 18 matches this winter, posting a 12-6 overall mark. She went 11-6 at the No. 6 spot and earned one victory at No. 5. Shank also closed out the season with a 7-3 record in her final 10 matches. She was a perfect 3-0 in her matches against Vassar, St. Lawrence and Virginia in the CSA Team Championships.
The Herons finished the year with an 11-7 overall record. William Smith defeated Virginia 6-3 to capture the Epps Cup at the 2013 CSA Team Championships. It's the fourth CSA Cup the Herons have earned, having captured the 2006 and 2007 Walker Cup and the 2009 Epps Cup.
