Hobart College senior forward
Richie Bonney headlines the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Basketball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He was elected to the Academic All-America first team for the second straight year and became the first student-athlete from the Colleges to be named the Academic All-America of the Year for his sport.
Bonney is a public policy studies and philosophy double major. He is a three-time Capital One Academic All-District first team selection and a three-time Liberty League All-Academic pick. Bonney is a Druid and Chimera, Hobart's senior class and junior class honor societies, respectively.
Since Shawn Fazio became the Colleges' first Academic All-American in 1979 (first team baseball), Hobart and William Smith student-athletes have been elected to 35 Academic All-America teams. Of those 35, 10 have been first team selections. Bonney joins former offensive lineman Brian Monaco as the only two-time first team selections in the Colleges' history.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
The lone repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America men's basketball first team, Bonney is averaging 19.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game for the Statesmen. While connecting on 56.9 percent of his field goal attempts, he has led Hobart to an 18-6 overall record. The Statesmen have secured their fourth straight Liberty League regular season championship with a 12-3 conference record.
Bonney's 18 double-doubles this season are second most in the nation, while he ranks 10th in rebounds per game. He currently leads the Liberty League in rebounding and ranks second in scoring average and field goal percentage. Bonney scored a season-high 31 points at Clarkson on Feb. 1 and pulled down a career-high matching 19 rebounds at Hartwick on Dec. 30.
Bonney has scored 1,621 points and pulled down 904 rebounds in his career. He is sixth on Hobart's all-time scoring list, 15 behind No. 5 Eric Nelson '98. Bonney is just the third Statesman to reach 900 career rebounds, trailing only Joe Corbett '03 (1,249) and Carmen Genovese '70 (967).
A native of Norwich, N.Y., Bonney earned NABC and D3hoops.com All-East Region second-team honors last season, while also being named to the All-Liberty League first team. In 2011-12, he was an All-Liberty League second-team selection, and earned Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors in 2010-11.
