Four members of the William Smith College basketball team secured a spot on the 2013-14 Liberty League All-Academic Team. Seniors
Jacqueline Murphy and
Erin O'Brien, junior
Molly Breen, and sophomore
Lauren Brustein were recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom and on the court.
To be eligible for All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2.
The 2013-14 Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Year and an all-conference honorable mention, Murphy shared the team lead and ranked seventh in the Liberty League in rebounding, producing 8.4 rpg, 7.5 ppg, and 1.8 apg. She ranks second in Heron history with 888 career rebounds. Murphy was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic team selection and graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in movement science.
An All-Liberty League second team selection, O'Brien led the team and ranked third in the league in assists, contributing 4.3 apg, 12.1 ppg, and 3.5 rpg. She ranked fourth in the conference in assist-to-turnover (1.7). O'Brien finished her career fourth on the William Smith all-time list with 352 assists and 23rd in career points with 880. She was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in economics.
Breen played in 25 games this season, starting 10. She was third on the team in rebounding at 4.9 rpg and added 4.7 ppg. A transfer from George Washington University, Breen had one year of athletic eligibility remaining, but graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. She was a two-time Liberty League All-Academic pick.
Brustein appeared in all 26 games for William Smith, starting 16. She averaged 17.5 minutes per game, 2.7 ppg, and 2.6 rpg. She is a biology major.
The Herons were 19-7 overall and finished third in the Liberty League with a 12-4 mark. The team's overall and conference win totals are the most for the program since 2007-08.
