Grange resigns from Hobart football staff

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College Football Head Coach Mike Cragg announced that Defensive Coordinator Nick Grange has resigned to accept a position with MassMutual Financial Group.

"We've been fortunate to have Nick Grange on our staff," Cragg said. "He's done a great job preparing our defense week in and week out. We're happy for Nick and his family and wish them nothing but the best."

In two seasons with the Statesmen, Grange directed one of the most dominant defenses in Division III. Hobart ranked in the top 30 in the country in scoring defense and total defense each year.

In his first season, Grange's defense was 16th in points allowed (14.5/g) and 30th in total yards allowed (296.4/g). The Statesmen went 10-1 in 2013, winning the Liberty League Championship and reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament.

A year later, Grange's D was 11th in total defense (265.1) and 30th in scoring (16.6) while also ranking in the top 20 in rushing defense (9th, 87.5 yds/g) and sacks (18th, 3.0/g). Hobart tied the program record for wins in a season, finishing the 2014 campaign with a 12-1 record.

Grange mentored 16 all-league selections over the past two years, including 2014 D3football.com National Defensive Player of the Year Tyre Coleman. Hobart's coaches have been voted the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year following each of the past two seasons.

Grange also spent nine seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Rochester. He lives in the Flower City with his wife, Margaret, and their three children.

Hobart will conduct a nationwide search for Grange's replacement.
