Pfohl’s game-winning TD voted GEICO Play of the Year

For the second year in a row, a Hobart College football play has been named the GEICO Play of the Year on the GEICO presents Best of College Football show on CBS. This year, senior wide receiver Jack Pfohl's 57-yard catch and run touchdown from junior quarterback Shane Sweeney was featured on the nationwide broadcast.

GEICO presents Best of College Football originally aired on Friday, Nov. 25. The program will reair on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 9 p.m. on CBS Sports Network (Channel 315 in the Time Warner Cable Finger Lakes market).

Each week for five weeks, four college football plays were nominated as the Play of the Week on the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page. The five weekly winners faced off in a week of finals voting to determine the 2016 GEICO Play of the Year.

On Oct. 1, Hobart trailed Merchant Marine 35-31 with less than a minute remaining. On second down and 10 from the Hobart 43, Sweeney fired a pass over the middle into the hands of Pfohl, who broke a pair of tackles and got a couple of key blocks as he raced down the Hobart sideline. His go-ahead touchdown with just 19 seconds remaining lifted the Statesmen to a 38-35 Liberty League win.

Hobart's play beat out other finalists from Berry, Case Western Reserve, Gettysburg, and Macalester. The Statesmen also had the GEICO Play of the Year last season when running back Bradley Burns took home top honors for a 36-yard touchdown run that saw him hurdle a would-be tackler.

Pfohl caught seven passes in the game for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Sweeney completed a Hobart game record 32 pass for 416 yards and five touchdowns against the Mariners.

A first-team All-Liberty League selection, Pfohl finished off October in a similar fashion. On Oct. 29, he had a Hobart game record tying 12 receptions for a career-high 197 yards and two TDs at WPI. His second touchdown catch, an 18-yarder, came with just three seconds remaining and gave the Statesmen a 35-31 Liberty League win. Pfohl finished the season with 58 receptions for 705 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 34 career games, Pfohl made 127 receptions for 1,438 yards and 12 touchdowns. He will graduate sixth in career receptions, tied for 11th in career receiving touchdowns, and 12th in career receiving yards.

The Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, Sweeney broke nearly all of the Hobart season passing records, including the marks for completions (266), yards (3,436), and passing touchdowns (36). A clutch performer, he directed five game-winning drives in the final three minutes of regulation this year. In two seasons as a starter, Sweeney has 395 completions for 4,983 yards and 53 touchdowns.

Hobart finished the season with a 9-2 overall record. The Statesmen earned a share of their 11th Liberty League Championship with a 6-1 record and made its 10th NCAA tournament appearance. The Statesmen lost in the first round of the NCAA playoffs 38-21 against defending national champion Mount Union.
