Letorney, Wherry invited to U.S. U23 selection camps

Two members of the Hobart College rowing team will set their sights on making the U.S. National Team for the Under 23 World Rowing Championships. Senior August Wherry and junior Austin Letorney will aim to represent the Statesmen and their country in Rotterdam, Netherlands, August 21-29.

Letorney is one of 36 rowers accepted to the U.S. Men's Under 23 National Team Selection Camp in Hanover, N.H., at Dartmouth College. The camp will be coached by the Big Green's Head Coach Wyatt Allen and Cornell University Men's Lightweight Coach Chris Kerber. Allen and Kerber will head up the selection for the men's eight and four that will compete at the World Championships.

Wherry is one of 12 athletes invited to the Lightweight Men's Under 23 National Team Selection Camp in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania. The camp will be led by the Quakers' Head Coach Collin Farrell, who will be in charge of selecting the lightweight men's four.

Invitations to the selection camps are based on performance on the 2015-16 National Team Ergometer Testing Protocol, coach recommendations, past performance in international and domestic racing, competitive performance during training sessions and the athlete's ability to match the style and technique of the crew as determined by the designated coach.

Letorney and Wherry are both members of the Hobart varsity eight that was named the 2016 Liberty League Crew of the Year. The boat captured gold medals at the Liberty League Championships, the Knecht Cup, and the Head of the Charles Regatta. The four-time Liberty League Boat of the Week added a silver medal at the NIRC Regatta. Letorney and Wherry also helped the Hobart 1V retain the Statesmen Cup with a head-to-head win over Ithaca this spring.

Wherry has previous experience wearing the red, white, and blue. In 2014, he and Robert McNamara '15 competed as Team USA's lightweight pair in Varese, Italy. Wherry and McNamara won the petite final, finishing seventh in the world.

Letorney hopes to be the seventh Statesman to represent Hobart on the international stage, while Wherry hopes to join Richard Klein '08 (2006 U23 U.S. National Team, 2007 U23 U.S. National Team) and Kent Smack '97 (2001 U.S. National Team, 2004 U.S. Olympic Team) as a two-time national team member. Rob Desino '94 (1997 U.S. National Team) and Chris Desino '94 (1997 U.S. National Team) also wore the stars and stripes in international competition.
