Hobart College junior quarterback Shane Sweeney was named the Liberty League Football Offensive Performer of the Week by the conference office today.
 
Sweeney was 31-of-45 passing for a career-high 420 yards and four touchdowns in Hobart's 41-35 season-opening win at Brockport. His 31 completions tied the Hobart single game record (Shawn Mizro '07 had 31 at Union on Nov. 5, 2005) while his 420 yards passing are third most in a game, his pass attempts are tied for fifth most in a game, and his TD passes are tied for sixth most in a game. Sweeney also rushed for 22 yards, giving him 442 yards of total offense, the second most by a Statesman (498, Nick Strang '13 vs. Union, Oct. 9, 2010). Sweeney was not sacked and did not throw an interception in the contest.
 
Sweeney directed touchdown drives on four of the team's final five possessions (he took a knee to run out the clock on the fifth) as the Statesmen rallied from a 35-28 deficit midway through the fourth quarter.
 
Sweeney leads the Liberty League in completions, completion percentage (68.9), passing yards, passing touchdowns, and pass efficiency (176.6).
 
The win over Brockport improved Sweeney's record as a starter at Hobart to 6-2. In eight career games, he has completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,967 yards and 21 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
 
Hobart (1-0) is receiving votes in this week's D3football.com poll. The Statesmen will be back in action at noon on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they kickoff at Endicott College. The Gulls (0-1) are coached by former Statesman Kevin DeWall '00.
