One of the finest and best-kept natural grass athletic fields in New York State, Boswell Field is home to Hobart’s football and lacrosse teams. Taking in a game at Boswell Field is a wonderful experience for the athlete as well as the spectator.
The field is named for Charles Partridge Boswell, an 1860 graduate of Hobart, whose generosity made it possible for the Colleges to purchase the land on which the field was originally built.
Initially, Boswell Field was located where the Colleges’ Warren Hunting Smith Library now stands and was known as the Boswell Bowl. It was moved to its present location in 1974.
The "Boz" has played host to dozens of NCAA Lacrosse Championship Tournament games, including the 2000 NCAA Division I North First Round Doubleheader, and in 2000 hosted its first NCAA Division III Football Tournament game, a 25-0 win over Bridgewater State College.
Boswell Field features seating for 4,500 and is often filled to standing-room-only. For the convenience of spectators, parking is available in an adjacent lot. Restrooms and a concession stand are located at the main gate.
Boswell Field and adjacent Elliott Varsity House are slated to undergo exciting renovations as a part of
Campaign for the Colleges. The grass of the Boz will be replaced with an artificial surface, all of the venue’s seating and the track will be replaced and lights will be added for night games. Additionally, locker room space will be expanded and existing locker rooms refurbished.
