For more than a dozen years, the William Smith Athletics Department has hosted the Great Heron Road Race, a charity event, raising more than $60,000 for breast cancer research and patient support. This spring the department has decided to forgo sponsoring the event and instead collaborate with Embrace Your Sisters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people in the Finger Lakes region faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
“The growth of the event over the years was inspiring,” says Sally Scatton, race director and head field hockey coach. "Over the years, the Heron Road Race received great support from the colleges, Geneva and the surrounding communities.
“Athletics teaches us that teamwork and collaboration are among the most powerful resources available to society. In light of the fact that our campus sponsors an ever increasing number of cancer awareness events and fundraisers, we felt that a direct partnership with Embrace Your Sisters would be the most valuable contribution we could make. While the department is sad not to be continuing their sponsorship of the race, we are very excited about our partnership with Embrace Your Sisters.”
