In 1971, the Statesmen Athletic Association established the Statesmen Award to recognize outstanding service to Hobart College athletics and to the SAA. In May of 1993, this award was renamed in memory of William J. Napier '57, and the award has been endowed through the generosity of Thomas B. Poole '61.
The Napier Award recognizes the loyalty and service which the late Bill Napier rendered to his College. As one of Hobart's most loyal and generous sons, he fully recognized and appreciated the value and meaning of intercollegiate athletics in the educational experience of Hobart students.
The devotion of Bill Napier to his alma mater and to his fellow man is a standard for all Hobart men to aspire to as they leave their College to serve as contributing members of our society. Bill Napier served as a director of the Statesmen Athletic Association until his sudden death on April 19, 1993. The Napier Classroom Center is a gift of Bill and his wife, Jane Napier, who currently serves as a trustee of the Colleges.
