GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart rowing welcomed Clarkson, Geneseo, Ithaca, Marietta, and RIT to the Hellstrom Boathouse for the annual HWS Challenge on the Canal today. The Statesmen won the novice 8 race in a dominating fashion, finishing 1:48 ahead of second place Marietta. The boat comprised of Robert McNamara, Owen Monahan, W. Hunter Holtz, Jordan Mueller, Tyler Wilson-Menting, Nick Hindle, Nick Faiello, Joe Biesemeyer, and coxed by Nick Snow came down the course in 16:43.

The Statesmen found themselves on the podium often with three second place finishes and two third place finishes. The varsity 8, varsity 4, and novice 4 all were edged out of the top spot by crews from Marietta. The Hobart's varsity 4 'B' entry finished third, as did the second varsity 8, which trailed two Marietta crews.

Close to 30 Hobart alumni returned to the shores of the Seneca-Cayuga Canal to race in the alumni 8 event. Three alumni eights raced down the course, all comprised of Statesmen, for bragging rights and reliving the memories of collegiate athletics. Alumni came from as far as California and some, like Olympic hopefuls Jack Trimble '11 and Richard Klein '08, took a day off from training to race with their peers.

After racing concluded, seven alumni and current team captains Harald Zurakowski and Coty Burgess were honored for their participation in the renowned Henley Royal Regatta. A picture to commemorate the event will be hung in Bristol Gymnasium.

“I'm very pleased with our performance today,” Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen said. “This is a great starting point as we enter the heart of our fall racing season.”

Hobart is back on the water on Oct. 15, when the Statesmen compete in the Head of the Genesee in Rochester.
