Rowing completes Day 1 of 2 on Lake Quinsigamond

WORCESTER, Mass.—The William Smith College rowing team completed its first of two days of racing on Lake Quinsigamond today.

In a compressed format, the 1V and 2V raced against WPI and Trinity to earn spots in the final just a short hour later.

Leading off the start and stretching their advantage to open water, the 2V of Alyssa Deem, Madeline Cook, Lizzy Houston, Elizabeth Warren, Giulia Acchione, Emma Lubrano, Jackie Steinman, Carey Sevier, and Lauren Pomerantz notched a win on the field, posting the third fastest time of the day (7:09.0) and positioning themselves in Lane 3 for the final against Ithaca, WPI, New Hampshire, Colby and Connecticut College.

The 1V of Hannah Glenshaw, Bridget Kiejna, Karoline Loretan, Laurie VanBenschoten, Annika Linden, Jennifer Sullivan, Margaret Cameron, Emma Lubrano, and Emma Hobika had a sluggish first 500 meters but gained momentum in the second 1,000 to come from a length down to trail by just 1.76 seconds and finish second place against No. 9 WPI. The Herons, ranked 10th in this week's CRCA poll, also posted the third fastest time of the day (6:53.96), setting themselves up to face No. 5 Ithaca, WPI, New Hampshire, No. 12 Colby and No. 14 Trinity.

In the varsity eight final, Ithaca and WPI established themselves as the early leaders by impressive margins.  William Smith, New Hampshire and Colby battled for third through the middle 1,000 meters. The Herons held a slight edge over the Wildcats and Mules going into the last 15 strokes but slid back into fifth by the line. The Bombers posted a winning time of 6:40.31. William Smith crossed the line at 6:57.64, just 1.5 seconds behind third place New Hampshire.

Similar to the 1V race, Ithaca and WPI battled for the top spot in the second varsity eight final. The Herons were in contention for third place through the first 1,000, but lost ground in the third 500. They finished fifth, in a time of 7:12.13, 6.29 seconds out of second place and more than 24 seconds ahead of the sixth place Camels.

In their only race of the day, the 3V of Hannah Baron, Lindsay Carr, Tori Malamas, Katie Frohman, Catherine DiCara, Davida Eyam-Ozung, Emma Loubsky-Lonergan, Tori Wissa, and Gabby Fraser stopping the clock at 7:51.05.

"We've got a very young squad and they impressed me today with their abilities to take on the new experience of being in a tight, crowded battleground," Head Coach Sandra Chu said. "We didn't execute the way we wanted to in our second race but we definitely learned from it. Both the 2V and 3V were also extremely agile with a late lineup switch when one of our athletes got sick just minutes before launching.

"We're very grateful for the opportunity to see WPI again tomorrow as well as a new set of competitors. Lake Quinsigamond always has excellent hosting and very strong competition and we're proud to be a part of that."
