Herons finish 3rd on Day 2 at WPI

The No. 12 William Smith College rowing team was seeded third on Day 2 of racing in Worcester, Mass., and both the Heron varsity eight and second varsity eight finished third this morning.
 
In the varsity eight races, WPI claimed first place in 6:44.3 and Tufts took second place in 6:46.01. The Heron boat of first-year Susan Hurwitz, sophomore Anna Moreau, first-year Molly Dexter, senior Elizabeth Warren, first-year Sarah Laferrera, sophomore Emma Lubrano, first-year Taryn Wenberg, senior Jennifer Sullivan, first-year Julia Walters finished third with a time of 6:59.47. Clark (7:34.49) and Skidmore (7:49.66) rounded out the field.
 
The William Smith second varsity eight powered by sophomore Elisabeth Rowedder, senior Nicole Guardino, sophomore Tori Malamas, first-year Emma Falkenstein, first-year Alexandra Deku, senior Carey Sevier, sophomore Giulia Acchione, sophomore Catherine DiCara, and first-year Gillian Casserly also finished third behind the host Engineers and the Jumbos. WPI logged a time of 7:04.1 and Tufts finished in 7:04.24. The Herons were next in 7:18.39. Clark came in fourth place with a time of 8:07.76.
 
"It's been a great weekend for the team in terms of the acquisition of skills and their ability to apply them," said Head Coach Sandra Chu. "I think both boats leave Worcester with a strong sense of not only what they learned but also what work needs to happen each day to continue along this path.  For the staff, we have a tremendous admiration for the steps we took in the past two days."
 
The Herons are back in action on Thursday, April 26, when they host Rochester at 6 p.m.
