PURCHASE, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team defeated 11th-ranked Manhattanville in an ECAC West game tonight at the Playland Ice Casino. The Statesmen improve to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference, while the Valiants drop to 5-4-0 on the season and 5-2-0 in the ECAC West.

Hobart jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, after senior Aleksey Koval connected for a power-play goal in the fourth minute. Senior Blake Bonham and first-year Ryan Corcoran assisted. Just over eight minutes later, junior Matthew Wallace capitalized on another power play to put the Statesmen up 2-0. First-year Brad Richard recorded the helper.

Hobart increased its lead to 3-0 in the 13th minute of the second stanza, thanks to a power-play tally from senior Christopher Bower. He was set up by first-year Chris Cannizzaro and Richard. Bower’s goal marked his ECAC West-high fourth game-winner of the season.

Manhattanville put its first point on the board with just over two minutes to play in the second period, following a goal from Mickey Lang. The Valiants cut their deficit to 3-2 in the eighth minute of the third with a power-play score by Matt Piegza.

Senior Bobby Cahill found the answer for the Statesmen, netting his second goal of the year in the 13th minute to put Hobart back up by two. Junior Patrick Moriarty and Richard assisted.

First-year goalie Nick Broadwater (Portland, Maine) recorded 32 saves in net for Hobart, earning his fourth victory of the year, while Sergiy Sorokolat stopped 22 shots for the Valiants.

Manhattanville held a 34-26 edge in shots and was 1-for-5 on the power play. The Statesmen were 3-for-9.

Hobart will be back in action on Dec. 12, when the Statesmen visit No. 1 Oswego for a non-league contest at 7 p.m.
