Stevens tabbed Rookie of the Week

Hobart College first-year David Stevens was named the ECAC West Men’s Hockey Rookie of the Week today, for his performance in the Statesmen’s contest vs. 13th-ranked Manhattanville on Saturday.

Stevens netted his first collegiate goal in Hobart’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Valiants. In the 14th minute of the second period, he tallied to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead. A forward, Stevens has played in 15 of a possible 20 games this season.

First-year goalie Nick Broadwater earned a spot on the ECAC West’s Weekly Honor Roll as well. He recorded 36 saves with a .923 save percentage and a 2.96 goals against average against Manhattanville. Broadwater leads the conference in save percentage (.926) and ranks second in goals against average (2.38).

The Statesmen (9-9-2, 5-4-1) will travel to sixth-ranked Elmira (16-3-1) for an ECAC West contest on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The Soaring Eagles top the league standings with a 10-0-0 mark. The two teams have met twice already this winter, with Elmira prevailing both times.

Hobart Basketball
Gibbons averaged a team-high 18.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg in a 1-1 week for the Statesmen. He scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded two steals at RPI. The following afternoon, Gibbons had 15 points and seven rebounds at Skidmore. For the week, he shot 64 percent from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts.

Mitchell went 4-0 at the Smith Round Robin over the weekend. Playing in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the order, she posted 3-0 sweeps of her opposition against Smith (a 6-3 Heron win), Northeastern (W 8-1), and Wellesley (L, 3-6). Vassar's Katherine Cornish was the only player to take a game from Mitchell this weekend. After dropping the opening game 11-9, Mitchell bounced back with 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 wins to take the match 3-1. She has the team's best individual record this winter (7-5) and has won five straight matches.
