ELMIRA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team handed sixth-ranked Elmira its first ECAC West loss of the season tonight, topping the Soaring Eagles 5-3. Paced by junior Patrick Moriarty’s two goals and one assist, the Statesmen improved to 10-9-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the league, while Elmira dropped to 16-4-1 on the season and 10-1-0 in the ECAC West.

Elmira opened the scoring six minutes, 17 seconds into the game, thanks to Rusty Masters’ 13th goal of the year. Hobart countered with its first point just over two minutes later. Junior Matthew Wallace netted a short-handed tally, his team-leading 12th goal of the winter and second short-handed, to even the score at 1-all. Moriarty picked up the assist.

The Statesmen recorded three goals in a span of one minute, six seconds in the second period, and took a 4-2 lead into the final break. Senior Gregory Alberti found junior Christopher Bower for a score 8:25 into the stanza, which was followed by back-to-back power play tallies from first-year Brad Richard and Moriarty at the 9:23 and 9:31 marks, respectively. First-year Chris Cannizzaro and Bower recorded the helpers on Richard’s goal, while Wallace and senior Jordan Zitoun set up Moriarty’s.

The Soaring Eagles responded in the 12th minute of the second period with a power-play goal of their own from Kevin Willer, but the two-goal deficit was as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest.

Moriarty, Wallace, and Zitoun connected in the same order for another power-play goal 6:57 into the third period to give Hobart a 5-2 lead. Elmira’s Andrew Wilcox tallied in the 16th minute to again bring the hosts within two, 5-3, but the Statesmen held onto their lead.

First-year Statesmen goalie Nick Broadwater collected 37 saves in his ninth win of the season. Casey Tuttle stopped 14 shots for Elmira, while Kevin Bolin recorded five saves in relief.

The Soaring Eagles held a 40-24 advantage in shots, but Hobart held the edge in power plays, converting 3-of-5 chances. Elmira was 1-for-8.

The Statesmen will be back in action Feb. 12-13, when they travel to Lebanon Valley for two ECAC West contests.
