Statesmen capture 2nd state rowing championship

The Hobart rowing team wrapped up a very successful run at the New York State Championships on Whitney Point Lake with a second gold medal and a silver medal. The Statesmen novice eight joined the second varsity eight as state champions, while the varsity eight earned a silver medal.

In the novice eight grand final, Hobart posted a three-seat victory over Army. The Statesmen covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 24.4 seconds. The Black Knights turned in a time of 6:25.7 with St. Lawrence taking third in 6:30.9.

Hobart's novice eight was powered by Sarah Tanzer, Coty Burgess, Reid Johnson, Rob Nanovsky, John Wasmund, Matt Bianco-Splann, Spencer McCormick, Eric Ohnmacht, and Matt Hubbard.

In the varsity eight grand final, Hobart was the top Division III finisher, claiming the silver medal in 6:03.3. Division I Marist took the gold medal in 6:01.5. Ithaca was third in 6:05.5.

Reynaldo Kelly, Andrew Fosbrook, Francis Craig, Jack Trimble, Andrew Cobb, Matt Scanlon, David Roberts, Harold Zurakowski, and Carmen Cimini produced Hobart's best finish in the varsity eight event at states since the 2007 crew also earned a silver medal.

The Statesmen have medal in the NYS varsity eight in four consecutive years (silver in 2007 & 2010, bronze in 2008, 2009). Cobb, Kelly, Roberts, Scanlon, and Trimble were in the varsity eight in 2009, while Cobb, Craig, and Fosbrook were part of the 2008 varsity eight.

Hobart will be back on the water on May 9, when the Statesmen compete in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.
